Static Metrics and the Recognition Problem

Spacetimes with a timelike isometry play an important role understanding solutions of the Einstein equations. Static metrics arise when the isometry is orthogonal to a spacelike hypersurface and provide a special case which leads to many interesting geometric questions. This talk will describe properties of static metrics associated in particular with definitions of energy and scalar curvature.
