genus: Macquariensis Mathematicae

The species Mathematicae is divided roughly into 3 subspecies; this is not a scientifically established subdivision but will do for our purposes here.

Firstly there are the Academics, comprising the Professors, Associate Professors, Lecturers, Senior Lecturers and Associate Lecturers. This group is populated predominantly with male specimens; this being a historical accident rather than by higher design.

Quite distinct but no less important are the General Staff whose duties are many and varied. Female specimens are much more prevalent within this group.

The third sub-species is the most diverse, containing the Visiting Fellows, Research Fellows, Tutors, Research Associates, Honorary Associates and Research Students, etc.

A fourth grouping, which is not a true sub-species, consists of the Vacation Scholars. These are immature, but rapidly developing, specimens who are present during the summer months. Some may travel large distances to associate with Academics for periods of 4-6 weeks. Support for travel and a subsistence allowance is provided.

Lecturers/Academic Staff

 These are the most vocal of the three subspecies. For semester stretches, of 12-13 weeks throughout the year, they appear each week at the same time and location, creating remarkable vocal displays in the presence of audiences who, for the most part, remain silent. Such audiences may vary in number from less than 10 to several hundred. The same individual will usually give several such displays each at a different time and location and to a different audience, with the same clockwork regularity each week. Also these individuals can frequently be found in congregations which generally include members of the 3rd subspecies, perhaps in equal or greater numbers. At such congregations they are the most vocal with members of the other subspecies being mainly silent; occasionally one gives a solo performance interspersed by remarks from the attendant academics.

An important distinguishing feature is that these individuals tend to inhabit an office all of their own. During semester weeks they can often be found there, when not at a gathering or giving a vocal display, to indulge in research activity or simply to rest. Outside of semester the offices may be less regularly inhabited, though this varies considerably with the individual, some displaying significant migratory tendencies. Typical offices have glass partitions which enable presence of the individual to be easily detected and the existence of research activity to be established. Other individuals prefer a fully enclosed environment. In either case contact can be established by telephone, electronic mail or a gentle tap on the door.
